Mary Alta (McClellan) Hamlyn

Mary Alta McClellan was born in Pope County, Illinois on June 10, 1877 to George W. and Nancy Wilson (Dill) McClellan.  Alta spent her childhood years in Pope County and Johnson County, Illinois before she met and married Herbert Earnest Hamlyn at the age of 21.  Herbert was the son of Jonas Hamlyn of Devon, England and Nancy (Nesbitt) Hamlyn of Indiana.  Alta and Herbert married in Johnson County, Illinois on March 23, 1898.  This was Alta’s first marriage and Herbert’s second.  (Herbert’s first wife Eva A. Crisler passed away a few years into their marriage.  There are no records of children born within his first marriage).

Shortly after their nuptials Herbert and Alta removed to Franklin Township, Marion County, Indiana to Herbert’s existing farm.  This union was blessed with 8 children, 6 of whom lived to adulthood.  The couple remained in Marion County the majority of their lives until they moved to Los Angeles, California sometime after 1930, presumably to be closer to their children.  The couple lived out the remainder of their lives in Los Angles, California where they both passed away. Herbert passed on July 21, 1943 and Alta passed July 11, 1951. Alta and Herbert were married for 45 years.

About Me

My photo
I started researching my family tree last year. My father is a West and my mother is a McClellan. Researching my family history has truly been a monumental task. I’ve spent untold hours searching for long lost relatives… Where’s a ghost whisperer when you need one? With the surname McClellan being so popular due to General George B. McClellan and the surname West being a geographical direction, the hunt was hindered on many occasions. Search engines have run me through the ringer. The fact is, I threw my hands in the air and swore to walk away from this project more times than I can remember. It really is a roller coaster ride. This project has caused me tears of anger, tears of joy and has heightened my already existing anxiety disorder to its limits. It has forced me to be patient when I didn’t want to be and caused me to be organized and detail oriented, which that in itself is a huge achievement. But most of all, it gave me hope and a sense of belonging.
