We as humans constantly define and re-define who we are as we grow through out our lifetime. We first define ourselves within our family. “The oldest”, “The baby”, “The hard-headed”, “The free-spirit”, “The hard-worker”, “The black-sheep”, etc...
As we grow, we become anxious to break away from the family and stake a claim on this world as an individual. Find who we are. Prove who we are. Our desires lead us to the endless activities we throw ourselves into to support who we want to become.
And when the smoke clears… we start our own families. We become re-acquainted with the precious bond of the family all over again. We remember how important the family is. We ultimately begin to look towards the legacy we came from or the legacy we wish to leave.
To me, learning our family history allows us to honor our dead, acknowledge the fact of their existence and form a spiritual bond with those before us. For not them and the grace of God we would not be here.
